Stop solving the effects and start solving the cause of the problem

As humans, our instinct is to solve an effect of the problem rather than find the source.

Stop solving the effects and start solving the cause of the problem

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "You can't solve a problem until you know the cause." The most popular definition of this idea comes from Einstein who said that insanity consists of repeating the same type of action or process over and over again expecting different results when we focus on solving the effects instead of focusing on solving the cause.

As humans, we are naturally inclined to want to solve the effects of a problem rather than solve the source of the problem. This might seem like common sense, but people often forget that there can be hidden causes behind problems just as there can be hidden symptoms (or effects).

It's like treating the symptoms of a disease rather than curing it. Symptoms are just one event that can indicate that your body is sick. It is best to first understand what is going on and find out what needs to be done before taking any action to fix it.

The difference between solving the effects and solving the cause, some examples

  • The problem is not solved just because it goes away. The root cause must be addressed for the solution to last. For example, if you have a headache and take an aspirin, then your head will feel better but when the aspirin wears off, the headache will return, so taking more aspirin won't help much. If instead of using a temporary solution, you address the cause of your headache or stomach ache with a long-term strategy such as exercise, drink plenty of water, reduce stress then your head will feel better for a long time. There are many causes for headaches and also stomach aches such as dehydration, food poisoning, allergies, a stomach ache from eating too much one type of food or drinking too much alcohol, etc.

  • When an organization addresses the problems of a product's lifecycle and related lost sales by addressing only the effects - such as adding new technological features to their product or changing a process - then the organization is solving the effect. When an organization addresses problems by addressing the causes - such as conducting research into customer needs and why their product needs new features to precisely meet those needs and finding out how to make it possible - then they are solving the cause of the problem.

  • When we get sick (cause) we first feel chills and fever (effect). If we fight the fever in order to lower it, we have not solved the disease but only its symptom.

  • To solve poverty we might think that all we need is money and jobs, but if we dig deeper into the problem we find that it is more complicated than providing people with financial stability. We need to address issues like education, health care, gender inequality, and social exclusion which can ultimately lead to solving the root of poverty.

  • If you're unemployed, it could be because your skills don't match what employers need in this economy. Instead of trying to find a job, it would be more beneficial for you to learn new skills so that your resume can match the new needs required by employers. You will then have a better chance of finding a job and solving the problem from both perspectives: both getting hired and solving the problem that caused your unemployment in the first place.

Solving the effects of a problem is easier than solving the cause

Sometimes we can't fix what caused the problem, so we try to make it better by fixing other things that are causing problems. While this idea might work at times, there are times when it will not be enough and will only lead to more problems. Many times we make mistakes due to a lack of knowledge of the subject matter or bad advice. Fixing the cause of a problem is harder than fixing its effects, but it is also more effective.

There are many potential causes of moisture, such as heavy rain, roof leaks, faulty plumbing, or construction work. These causes can lead to moisture in the ground floor areas of your home. If not addressed, it can cause many problems such as mold and moisture stains on the walls and furniture, black mold in the bathroom and kitchen, etc. Some of the effects on people are asthma or allergies that can be triggered by mold spores, with the associated increased risk of respiratory problems and infections.

If you are worried about humidity in your home, contact a specialist and not a "generalist"

Experience is very important to be able to analyze the situation and find the best solution or solutions depending on the specific case.

It is important to proceed in the analysis with the method and by the exclusion of scenarios, the causes could also be multiple. The objective of the specialist is to find the best solution(s) at the lowest possible cost for the client, with a logical procedure and with clear and well-defined priorities.

The effect of procrastination on your mind

You know you should do something, but you don't. Why?

But what are the causes? Procrastination can stem from a variety of sources such as fear of failure, perfectionism, not wanting to be judged, fear of success, and more depending on the situation.

There are also many underlying reasons why people procrastinate such as lack of motivation, mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, family issues, daily distractions (such as social media), and more. First, you need to identify the source of your procrastination before you can fix it. The problem is not solved just because it goes away. The root cause must be addressed for the solution to last

I hope this blog has helped you understand the difference between fixing the effects of a problem and fixing the causes. Sometimes fixing the effects will only lead to more problems, such as in cases of rising damp where other more expensive solutions are needed. It is important to be able to identify the cause of your moisture problem so that you can take action that will last.

It is not always easy because sometimes there are many causes, so the method of approaching the problem must be serious and professional and not left to chance.

In conclusion, if to solve the pathology of rising damp we rely on expensive injections or invasive building interventions of waterproofing even more important is like taking the pill (expensive) to lower the fever ...
